Sometimes 30 degrees and clear skies, other times rain and biting winds. Golf weather is unpredictable, especially during spring and autumn – that's why it's important to equip yourself properly for your round. But how do you choose the right option among all the brands, models and price ranges of rainwear? Follow along as we guide you through it.
Is rain gear an important part of your golf (are you a player who plays regardless of weather and wants the best?) or just a necessary evil if it rains? If it's important, it might be worth treating yourself to one of the top rain suits that offers good freedom of movement, breathability, and water resistance for extended periods. One that will also last many years and many washes. If you don't play often or prefer not to play in the rain, a less expensive option will work fine.
If you buy a cheaper rain suit, they often lack stretch, meaning you'll need to go up in size to be able to move in it. This can make it somewhat cumbersome to play in. If you buy a better rain suit that's more tailored and has stretch, you should aim for a suit and size that fits well with a polo shirt and a thin mid-layer underneath.
A slightly more expensive rain suit often has stretch and fits better on the body during the golf round.
It depends entirely on how much you use it, of course. But a solid Gore-Tex suit that is kept clean and properly waterproofed can easily last 10 years with normal playing frequency.
Keep it clean. If it's dirty, it will wear more and have reduced performance. It's also important to re-waterproof the surface, preferably after each wash. It's crucial to read the care instructions carefully, as they can vary significantly between rain suits. Some need tumble drying to activate the waterproofing. Others must absolutely not be tumble dried as this will destroy them. So read carefully!
Skip playing golf when it rains! It's an outdoor sport – and golf is wonderful at any time. Buy a good rain suit and you'll be a winner even when it rains...
